NARROW BANDING

Narrow banding is in force to allow efficient use of the frequency spectrum.  It has been implemented by the FCC in the US with European bodies expected to follow.  The regulations, state that two-way radios can no longer use 25KHz channel spacing.  The allowed channel spacing would therefore be narrowed to 12.5KHz.  It is important to note that this was stage one, the next stage will reduce the spacing further to 6.25KHz. The latest update included a set of radio frequencies that can only be used by DMR devices as they operate on 6.25KHz channel spacing.

 

TETRA

TETRA devices are not covered in the standards, effectively making the use of TETRA radios illegal for onboard UHF communications. The regulations governing the use of maritime radio are detailed in the International Radio Regulations set by the (ITU) and by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).  

 

The ITU brought forward M.1174-3 which describes the technical characteristics of equipment and stipulates the available marine frequencies and modulation types that can be legally used. All radios used must conform to ETSI standard EN300 720.

 

SOLAS

 

Under SOLAS a key stipulation is the need for full communications between crew, via specifically integrated ATEX radios.

The regulations state:

“For ships constructed on or after 1 July 2014, a minimum of two, 2-way portable radiotelephone apparatus for each fire party for fire-fighter’s communication shall be carried on board. Those 2-way portable radiotelephone apparatus shall be of an explosion-proof type or intrinsically safe. Ships constructed before 1 July 2014 shall comply with the requirements of this paragraph not later than the first survey after 1 July 2018.“

A well functioning Distributed Antenna System (DAS) is essential for maximum vessel coverage.  Our services include exsiting DAS Evaluation and testing through to full DAS design and advanced testing to commission.  If a DAS is not an options then we can advise you on an IP connection to give coverage.  Either way we have the experience to help.
